VW Jetta 2022 improves fuel efficiency with its engine update
In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new 2022 VW Jetta that made its US debut in August. It’s a mid-cycle refresh, but VW decided to give the compact sedan a new, slightly larger 1.5-liter engine that will be shared with the Taos.
This engine update is proving to be beneficial, at least in terms of fuel efficiency, as the EPA released the official fuel economy figures for the Jetta 2022 – and they look great from all angles. More importantly, even the more powerful Jetta GLI using the larger 2.0-liter gets improved fuel efficiency.
According to the EPA, standard models equipped with a six-speed manual transmission have combined fuel efficiency of 29 mpg city, 43 mpg highway, and 34 mpg. S models equipped with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission have an EPA-estimated 31 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined. SE and SEL models equipped with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission have combined an EPA-estimated 29 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined.
By comparison, the stick-equipped 2021 Jetta has an EPA-estimated rating of 30 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined, while those equipped with an AT get 29 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 33 mpg rated are combined.

For the Jetta GLI, the EPA rates the MT-equipped compact sedan at 26 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. Those with the optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission have an EPA-estimated rating of 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined.
These numbers are slightly better than the 2021 ratings, which are 24 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined for the manual and 24 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined.
The EPA claimed that buyers of the Jetta 2022 can save up to $ 1,500 in fuel over five years compared to the national average for new vehicles, while those who choose the GLI can save up to $ 500.
The VW Jetta 2022 and its sporty GLI version should reach dealers in the USA in the last three months of the year.
