VW ID. Buzz takes sides in Obi-Wan Kenobi’s battle with Darth Vader
Volkswagen has two unique ID. Buzz Electric Vans inspired by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader, the main characters in the latest Star Wars series.
The vehicles were unveiled on the May 26 Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere carpet as a surprise addition to the fan event, which was also attended by Volkswagen brand ambassador and star of the series, Ewan McGregor.
Fans can look at the ID. Buzz metal showcars at the Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, California (May 26-29) as part of Volkswagen’s ongoing collaboration with the new series, coming to Disney+ on May 27th.
The unique electric vans are called ID. Buzz Light Side Edition and ID. Buzz Dark Side Edition, embodying the light and dark side with eye-catching details for Star Wars fans. Using special adhesive foils on the body of the ID. Buzz EVs created the designers skins that embody the two opposite sides.
Starting with the Light Side Edition based on the ID. The Buzz passenger version has a beige bottom inspired by the shade of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s tunic. This combines with a shiny chrome top that references the design of spaceships and droids from the Star Wars universe.
The two areas are separated by a blue line on the side that continues forward into the headlights and light band, a nod to Obi-Wan’s blue lightsaber. Other unique elements include the transparent blue glass house to match the underbody lighting, Rebel Alliance logos on the side windows and the wheel center caps, which come in a custom 21-inch design.
The Dark Side Edition, based on the ID. Buzz Cargo, is the nemesis of the Light Side Edition. It combines a gloss black base with a matte black top, contrasted by side lines, headlights, light bands and window surfaces in a shade of red, the color of Darth Vader’s lightsaber. Red underbody lighting is also on the agenda, as are Empire logos on the body and in the center of the unique 21-inch wheels.
Another interesting touch is the ID. Buzz lettering used on both showcars, styled in the classic Star Wars “Aurebesh” font instead of the standard Volkswagen font. That’s because designers from Lucasfilm and Volkswagen worked closely together on the special project.
“It’s about bringing two icons together. ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ brings back iconic characters from Star Wars and will connect generations worldwide – just like the VW bus, whose myth with the ID. Buzz.”
Volkswagen Head of Design Jozef Kabaň
The new partnership with the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series is intended to give Volkswagen an additional boost to its global electrification strategy and to focus even more on emotions when positioning the brand. At the beginning of the month, the broad “Obi-Wan Kenobi” campaign started with a spot in which the ID. Buzz starred alongside well-known Star Wars characters (see video at top of this page).
