VW, Daimler and BMW join a new alliance for a cloud-based digital ecosystem
For Pacheco, it all depends on the Alliance’s ability to gradually demonstrate results.
“The original concept and ambitions are very encouraging, but the alliance needs to grow beyond Germany in order to have a global impact in the automotive industry – not just at the supplier level, but also at the OEM level,” he said.
“When the results are shown and Catena-X achieves truly global coverage, it can help OEMs and suppliers improve supply chain efficiency and even be better prepared for future supply chain disruptions.”
With the increasing networking, the alliance of automakers and suppliers hopes for improved conditions to further advance the transformation of the industry. Participation in the exchange is intended to ensure the competitiveness of the European automotive industry in general.
“With Catena-X it will be possible to interconnect the data chains on the basis of uniform industry-wide standards,” said Michael Prinz, BASF Europe Director for Marketing Transport, Performance Materials. “The members of the alliance are in the process of building prototypes for these scenarios in the current project phase.”
Prinz said the exchange of data or information between companies is increasingly becoming a necessary core competence in the industry.
“We’re working together on a number of early use cases related to sustainability, quality management, logistics, maintenance and supply chain management,” he said. “In addition, the companies in the automotive industry formulate the common requirements for the software solutions so that this information exchange can be carried out simply, efficiently, fairly and safely in the future.”
According to Prinz, the members of the exchange would like to derive process descriptions, formats, results and freely usable open source elements (e.g. connectors for accessing and using the solution) and make them available to all actors in the value chain of the automotive industry.
For Frank Göller, Head of Digital Production in the VW Group, data is the central resource of digitization and an important driver on the company’s path to becoming a sustainable digital company.
