Volkswagen refuses to guarantee electric car production in Spain
The Volkswagen Group plans to produce an electric SUV at the Landaben plant in Navarra and a compact electric SUV at the Martorell plant in Barcelona from 2025. Now it appears that a final decision on the two initiates will depend on conditions and government incentives.
After the supervisory board meeting on Thursday, December 9th, the German consortium confirmed that it would generate additional synergies and use economies of scale with the comprehensive electrification of its European plants.
As part of the electrification strategy “Planning round 70” by 2025, the corporate headquarters and the production center in Wolfsburg will be rebuilt and the company’s competitiveness will be strengthened through increased investments in future technologies.
Investments totaling 159,000 million euros are planned for the next few years, 89,000 million euros of which will be primarily in electromobility and digitalization. As Alfredo Morales, President of the Volkswagen Works Council in Navarre, said, this statement by the Volkswagen Group is “very good news for Navarra as a whole”.
While the final decision will be based on government incentives, Morales assures that the Spanish government has “done a good job” on the PERTE (Strategic Recuperation and Economic Transformation Project) of the electric car.
He also stressed that it is “a matter of time” before it becomes a reality. “It will be the government that will add the icing on the work that has been done so far,” said Morales European press.
The chairman of the committee reiterated that the Volkswagen declaration was “a confirmation of everything that has been said today” and assured that “Volkswagen Navarra has a future in the medium and long term”.
He highlighted that the two vehicles Landaben could reach are both in the SUV segment, “vehicles that are booming in the market right now, leaving a bigger profit margin that is better for everyone so they can negotiate better terms for the company can and “the staff themselves”.
“Although we have time estimates and are conducting studies on the production of electric vehicles, we have to start preparations as soon as possible,” he said, emphasizing the need to open the factories. Due to a lack of parts, the factory stopped production on November 29th and will not resume until December 14th, as of. reported navarra.elespanol.com.
