Volkswagen plans new location in Germany to meet Tesla’s Gigafactory, Auto News, ET Auto
The plant, which will still require the approval of the Volkswagen supervisory board in the coming weeks, is part of the Group’s Trinity project, as part of which the carmaker wants to build a flagship electric sedan in Wolfsburg from 2026.
Volkswagen, which did not provide a cost estimate for the plant, was aiming for a production time of 10 hours per vehicle for the Trinity model, similar to what Tesla will need to assemble the Model 3 at the planned location in Grünheide.
Building a completely new plant is an alternative to adapting the existing Wolfsburg plant to produce the Trinity model, which VW says limits the possibilities for more radical changes to the manufacturing process.
“That is why we are planning to build on the green field: efficiently and without restrictions due to existing structures,” says Volkswagen brand boss Ralf Brandstätter.
“This will give us the time and space to gradually and thoroughly modernize the main plant and raise production there to a new level.”
