Volkswagen CEO Elon Musk Agrees Against Hydrogen Cars
Volkswagen chief Herbert Diess has criticized hydrogen cars, saying these vehicles have not been proven to be environmentally friendly. His remarks found support from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Diess referred to a report by a German media group called Handelsblatt, which showed a study claiming hydrogen cars are not a proven way to achieve climate neutrality.
According to the study, conducted by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the direct use of electricity would make more economic and ecological sense in the years to come, especially in the passenger vehicle segment. He also said that new hydrogen-based fuels could keep combustion technology alive for longer, which in turn would ensure continued reliance on fossil fuels and therefore more greenhouse gas emissions and put endanger the climate objectives.
âThese fuels as a universal climate solution are a bit of a false promise. While they are wonderfully versatile, they cannot be supposed to replace fossil fuels on a large scale. This can only be achieved with direct electrification. “said Falko Ueckerdt, the lead author of the published study.
The study claims that hydrogen-powered cars use around five times more energy than battery-electric vehicles. He claims that the production of these cars can consume up to fourteen times the amount of electricity needed for vehicles with internal combustion engines.
Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess took to Twitter to share the report and wrote: “The hydrogen car is NOT the air conditioning solution. Electrification has prevailed in traffic. The mock debates are a waste of time. Please listen to the science! “
Diess found support from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who responded to the VW chief’s remarks by saying, âDiess is right. Hydrogen is an incredibly stupid form of energy storage for cars. It’s worth considering for a rocket top stage, which is its most convincing use. “
