The cheaper VW ID.4 may be coming to the US
Price remains one of the main obstacles with electric vehicles. According to CarBuzz, VW plans to introduce a new ID.4 version which will be more affordable than the current ID.4 Pro. “We will offer a cheaper version with a 62 kWh battery when we locate,” a VW spokesperson said at the point of sale.
Currently, the ID.4 in the US comes with an 82kWh battery, but only 77kWh is actually usable. So if VW came out with a 62kWh battery for the ID.4, there’s a good chance the EV could actually use around 52kWh from the pack. This theory is supported by the new entry-level ID.4 that Volkswagen has just introduced to the UK market. As Inside electric vehicles points out, Volkswagen has released a 52 kWh battery for the ID 4 in Britain.
For Volkswagen, coming out with a more affordable version of the ID.4 would certainly increase its popularity. Few automakers can compete with Tesla’s lineup, but they can offer better prices, especially since Tesla no longer has federal tax credits.
In Britain, the new 52 kWh battery model is designed to travel up to 213 miles, depending on configuration, on the WLTP cycle. Abroad, VW will offer the ID.4 with the 52 kWh battery in two versions: Pure with 146 horsepower and Pure Performance with 167 horsepower. Both versions are also available in the City and Style trim levels.
Currently, the ID.4 is available with rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive powertrains. RWD models produce 201 horsepower, while AWD models are rated at 302 horsepower. With RWD, the ID.4 can travel up to 260 miles. Volkswagen did not specify the range of the ID.4 with AWD. If the next 62 kWh battery pack offers the same capacity as the 52 kWh pack recently introduced in Britain, which it should be since VW is limiting the battery pack for longer life and longer range. predictably, consumers can expect to make sacrifices. . A more affordable version would make the ID.4 even more competitive.
