Teen driving Volkswagen Golf 7 caught 200 km / h in 60 zone!
The teenager was caught in Cape Town in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A 16-year-old teenager at the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf 7 was caught in Cape Town in the early morning hours of May 23, 2021 at speeds of more than 200 km / h. A Ghost Squad officer in an unmarked cruiser spotted the Golf 7 driving at high speed down Jan Smuts Drive towards Grassy Park.
The city of Cape Town has not confirmed what Volkswagen Golf 7 was specifically driven, but given the 200 km / h overspeed, we can assume it is either one GTI or a R..
As the official reported, the 16-year-old driver ignored several red lights and refused to stop. This prompted the officer to request a fuse that allowed the vehicle to be stopped on Old Strandfontein and Ottery Road.
“To the consternation of the officers, the driver was a very young man who informed them that he had just turned 16 the day before. He had five passengers in the vehicle, around the age of 15. It also turned out that the driver had taken his brother’s new car without permission.
“I shudder when I think of the possible tragedy that could have happened here. This wasn’t fun driving, but a reckless hazard, and I hope this will be a lesson for everyone involved. Also the fact that these teenagers were absent after the curfew is another problem, especially given the current resurgence we are witnessing, ”said Alderman JP Smith, member of the city’s mayors’ committee for security.
The City of Cape Town confirms that the teenager has been released back into his father’s care.
During the week, officials across Cape Town arrested 90 suspects, including 51 for alcoholic driving and 27 for reckless and negligent driving. The 164 vehicles, 198 cell phones and 68,270 fines also seized. In general, the city’s law enforcement agencies arrested 202 people and fined 75,087.
