New Volkswagen ID8 confirmed: price, technical data and release date
Volkswagen’s growing range of ID electric cars will soon have a full-size SUV called the ID8. Read on to find out more about this exciting new model.
- VW ID8 SUV confirmed
- Probably based on existing electric cars
- Will be the largest ID SUV to date
- Seven-seater model possible
- All-wheel drive variant likely
- Extended self-driving functions
- Should be released before 2025
Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess confirmed in a strategy presentation this week that the ID series of electric vehicles will be supplemented by an Atlas-sized SUV called the ID8.
This model will lead the current product range, which already includes the SUVs in Golf size ID3 and larger ID4. This larger variant, possibly with three rows of seats, will be an alternative to the Tesla Model X and the upcoming BMW iX and Audi e-Tron models.
New VW ID8 design
There’s a strong family resemblance between the various ID SUV models, so you can expect the ID8 to take over styling cues from the existing ID4 and the upcoming coupe-style ID5.
This could mean similar LED headlights and brake lights with a thin, full-width LED connector bar, flush-mounted door handles, and a smoothed front grille. It will be similar in size to the US-specific three-row Atlas SUV.
New VW ID8 interior
As with the exterior, the new Volkswagen ID8’s cabin design will most likely be an evolution of the ID4’s sharp new layout.
A large central touchscreen (maybe two for the ID8) and a digital driver information display are complemented by a minimum of physical buttons and switches.
New VW ID8 batteries and range
If the new ID8 is actually based on VW’s existing electric cars (the so-called MEB platform), it could share many components with the current Volkswagen ID4. This model is available with between 148 hp and 204 hp in rear-wheel drive and 299 hp in the all-wheel drive, twin-engine GTX models.
The larger and heavier ID8 will most likely use the more powerful motors and could be paired with the ID4’s 77kWh battery, which gives this car around 300 miles of range. The larger ID8 could also enable even larger battery capacities in the future.
New VW ID8 price and release date
There’s no official release date for the VW ID8 yet, but it should be announced well before 2025 in order to meet VW’s goals of offering a full fleet of electric vehicles by that date.
Judging by the prices of the ID3 and ID4, you can assume that the ID8 will cost around 20% more than the current US spec Atlas SUV. If this model were offered in the UK it could start at £ 70,000.
