Long-range electric trucks will arrive in 2024

MAN Truck & Bus (part of Traton, which is part of the Volkswagen Group) has already introduced some electric vehicle models (buses, trucks and vans), but electrification has yet to be scaled up.
According to MAN boss Dr. Andreas Tostmann will start converting to battery electric vehicles in 2024.
In Handelsblatt‘s interview (via Electrek), Andreas Tostmann said the company plans to mass-produce electric trucks with a range of 500 km (311 miles) in 2024.
That is significantly more than the current MAN eTGM truck, which can travel up to 200 km on one battery charge.
MAN eTGM specifications:
- 26 ton truck
- Range of up to 200 km (124 miles)
- Battery capacity – not known
- electrical drive power: 264 kW (360 PS) and 3,100 Nm
- AC charging – three-phase 22-44 kW
- DC charging – up to 150 kW

At a later date, the company plans to achieve a range of 700-1,000 km (435-622 miles), which would be really impressive.
One interesting tip from MAN is that the company’s CEO prefers battery electric vehicles over hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, especially from a profitability perspective.
“Cost parity with diesel can be achieved faster with an electric drive than with a fuel cell.”
The switch to electric vehicles is inevitable and other manufacturers are also moving in a similar direction. In the bus segment, nine out of ten new city buses in Europe will be electric by 2030.
MAN is currently offering the MAN Lion City E electric buses in 12 m and 18 m articulated versions.
The MAN company also offers eTGE based on the Volkswagen e-Crafter.
