London’s largest taxi company will be fully electric with 4,000 electric vehicles by 2023
Addison Lee, a London-based private taxi and courier company and the UK’s largest private vehicle rental company, announced today that its entire fleet will be fully electric by 2023. The current fleet currently comprises around 4,000 cars.
More electric taxis for London
The company says it will spend £ 160 million ($ 219 million) to switch to electric vehicles two years before any other major private rental car companies in London, including Uber.
Addison Lee cooperates with Volkswagen on the purchase of ID.4s. It will be the UK’s largest EV purchase by a private rental company.
Starting in November, the taxi company will be bringing 200 Volkswagen ID.4s a month onto the streets of London.
Liam Griffin, CEO of Addison Lee, said of the charging infrastructure for their soon-to-be-huge fleet:
With just over 300 quick chargers in London, the charging infrastructure for this change is not yet in place. For this reason, we have started looking for partners for electric vehicle charging who can offer innovative solutions to our drivers’ needs and hope to be able to exchange information about them soon.
Earlier this year, Addison Lee bought the London taxi fleet operator Comcab, which consists of 650 electrified black taxis.
I think the VW salesman who negotiated this huge deal stands for a very nice fruit basket.
Charging company: This is a great opportunity. Now write your suggestions.
Anyone who has been in London for any length of time knows how ubiquitous Addison Lee’s cars are. Hell, if I add it all up, I’ve probably spent almost two years of my own life being driven around by Addison Lee cars late at night after working long shifts on the newsroom.
This will weigh on emissions from the UK capital. Or as Addison Lee puts it: “20,000 emission-free journeys in London every day”.
The company has always been reliable and efficient in my opinion. Now they are becoming environmentally conscious. It’s a great Zero Emissions Day announcement and welcome news ahead of COP26.
