AURORA, Ont., Jan. 27, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Magna continues its growth in electrification with secondary eDrive systems coming to market on Volkswagen’s MEB platform in Asia, Europe and North America. The team at HASCO Magna Electric Drive Systems Co., Ltd. (HME) in China has started mass production of secondary eDrive systems for the Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover, one of the automaker’s vehicles on the MEB platform.

HME is the global supplier of secondary eDrives for Volkswagen’s all-wheel drive MEB models with an output of more than 185 kW. The highly integrated eDrive system is specially optimized for secondary eDrives for electrified vehicles. The system was developed using Magna’s fully integrated, modular and scalable building block approach, resulting in a cost-effective and sophisticated product that meets the diverse requirements for global deployment. It is one of many eDrive products in the Magna portfolio, covering power ranges up to 250 kW for all vehicle types.

“We are very proud to be the global supplier for all secondary eDrives for Volkswagen’s MEB platform and to see the first vehicles come to market,” said Tom Rucker, President of Magna Powertrain. “This is Magna’s latest high voltage eDrive system to be industrialized for volume production and we are pleased to make it available to the global market.”

“This development is proof of the successful cooperation between Magna and HASCO and an important milestone in our electrification strategy. As the leading supplier of eDrive systems in China, we are proud to support our customers around the world in their transition to new energy vehicles,” added Haitao Zhang, President of HASCO.

The system integrates an induction electric motor, an integrated single-speed gearbox, a high-voltage inverter and the corresponding software and control. It also delivers 80kW of peak power to the front wheels and has best-in-class drag torque, optimizing efficiency.
