GM challenges big Tesla advantage

Tesla (TSLA) – Get Tesla Inc. report is known as an industry leader in all areas related to electric vehicles.
CEO Elon Musk’s pioneering company set records when it produced the most EVs in 2021 with 930,422 built and 936,222 EVs. The company plans to deliver well over 1 million vehicles in 2022, having delivered over 564,743 electric vehicles in the first half of the year.
Chinese electric vehicle company BYD Motor delivered 641,350 more vehicles in the first half, but in Tesla’s defense the company was hampered for several weeks by Covid-19-related shutdowns at its Shanghai plant, and that plant was responsible for half of its global production responsible 2021.
Tesla’s other competitors are struggling to keep up with the company’s production and delivery numbers.
Tesla faces competition from many competitors
Volkswagen showed some of the best results of Tesla’s competition in the first half of 2022 with 217,100 electric vehicles. ford (f) – Get the Ford Motor Company Report delivered almost 23,000 electric vehicles in the first half of 2022. Rivian (RIVN) – Get Rivian Automotive Inc. report says it is targeting production of 25,000 electric vehicles in 2022. General Motors (GM) – Retrieve the General Motors Company Report less than 25,000 electric vehicles delivered in 2021 and over 7,600 in the first half of 2022.
Tesla is also the industry leader in vehicle charging stations with over 30,000 Superchargers around the world. Volkswagen’s electric car charging subsidiary Electrify America has 3,500 charging ports in the USA and 807 stations in Canada.

GM encourages more EV customers
General Motors is committed to driving widespread electric vehicle adoption, increasing access to vehicle charging and enhancing long-distance electric travel through a new partnership with Pilot Travel Centers to install and operate a fast-charging network that will power off 2,000 charging stations across the country.
The charging stations are powered, operated and maintained by EVgo (EVGO) – Get the EVgo Inc. report and open to all EV brands in up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers along US highways connecting urban and rural communities from the East Coast to the West Coast, including various metro areas.
The collaboration aims to install charging stations at 50-mile intervals across the US. For GM, this development is part of its nearly $750 million investment in EV charging infrastructure
“We are committed to an all-electric, zero-emissions future, and ensuring the right charging infrastructure is in place is a key piece of the puzzle,” GM Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra said in a July 14 statement. “With travel centers across North America, Pilot Company is an ideal partner to reach a broad audience of EV drivers.”
GM customers receive special benefits such as exclusive reservations, charging discounts, a streamlined charging process through plug-and-charge, and integration with GM’s vehicle brand apps that provide real-time charger availability and route planning assistance.
“GM and Pilot Company developed this program to combine private investment with intended government grant and utility programs to reduce range anxiety and significantly close the gap in demand for long-range EV chargers,” said Shameek Konar, CEO by Pilot, in a statement. “Our travel centers are well equipped to provide EV charging with 24/7 amenities and convenient proximity to major roads across the country. We look forward to working with GM and the US Department of Transportation to make convenient coast-to-coast electric vehicle travel a reality through our national network of travel centers.”
GM’s investment in EV charging will help fund access to more than 100,000 charge points in the US and Canada through the Ultium Charge 360 ecosystem, building a network of 3,500 charge points in major metropolitan areas by 2025 and up to 40,000 Installing chargers at local merchants communities focused on underserved rural and urban areas.
