Ford F-150 Lightning is America’s best-seller in electric mode

With electric cars, there is a lot of talk of a “tipping point” as they become so ordinary and accessible that they become the norm. America’s best-selling truck that transforms the electric vehicle is as good a time as any to put a quid in the cliché pot and iron it. If the Ford F-150 can go electric, so can it.

It is the F-150 Lightning, borrowing its name from a special V8 of the late 90s, but its thought dates back to two decades later. Its two engines are connected to four-wheel drive offering peaks of 563 hp and 775 lb-ft. This makes it the most powerful F-150 to date and leads to an “insanely fast” pickup according to Ford.

In slightly more mathematical terms, it’s 0-60 mph in the middle of the four. Perhaps more relevant stats, however, are its maximum range (230 to 300 miles, depending on spec), payload (900 kilograms), and towing capacity (4.5 tons). And the EV Life brings something new to the F-150 – even more front storage (400 liters of volume, 180 kilos of payload) in its fairly massive motorized chassis.

“ Powered ” because not only can the Lightning’s battery be used for travel, you know, but it’ll also power your work tools through four outlets. You can even plug in the Lightning in your home as a power source in the event of a storm and power outage.

Rest assured that this F-150 is also packed with classic truck-relevant technology. There is Co-Pilot 360, which allows hands-free autonomy on approved roads. On-board scales let you know how close you are to that maximum payload. And a hitch assist system helps you reverse and steer towards your trailer. Not to mention a multitude of off-road modes to get the most out of its 4×4 transmission.

“For Ford and the US auto industry, the F-150 Lightning represents a watershed moment as we move towards an emissions-free, digitally connected future,” said Bill Ford. “The F Series has been America’s best-selling truck for 44 years, the backbone of work across the country and a trusted icon for generations of customers. Now we are revolutionizing it for a new generation. “

It is no accident that Ford made traditional electric vehicles out of Mustang, Transit, and F-150 badges before anything else. “Ford is starting with zero-emission versions of its most popular and beloved franchises,” we are told, “with many more to come in the years to come.”

Production will start in 2022 from a new plant in Detroit using “ sustainable practices ”. Ford has already rated it, however, with the F-150 Lightning starting at $ 39,974 and bookable online with a deposit of one hundred dollars.
