AUGUSTA – A car slid off the icy Tall Pines Way in Augusta and down a 6-meter embankment early Thursday and landed on its roof on its roof, according to rescuers in Bond Brook.
The driver was wet and shaken, but otherwise uninjured. The man, who was not identified Thursday, escaped the overturned car and water before rescue workers arrived.
Firefighters who responded to the call put on wetsuits and went into the Bond Brook freeze to confirm no one was in the Volkswagen Passat, according to Augusta Fire Department chief David Groder.
“We couldn’t confirm that there was no one in the vehicle and until we confirm something we don’t just walk away, so (firefighters) got dressed, tightened the ropes and checked it as best as possible,” said Groder. “Nobody else was in there.”
Groder said the driver apparently drove off Bond Brook Road onto Talls Pines Way and was unable to turn right onto the bridge due to the icy surface of the road. Instead, the car came off the lane to the left of the bridge, down an embankment, and came to a stop on its roof in the stream.
The incident was reported to rescue workers at 5:20 a.m. The original report called for an ambulance to be dispatched to help a person who was wet and barefoot while walking on the street, officials said.
Groder said the driver had been taken to the hospital for an examination.
The car was towed out of the creek around 7 a.m.
