BMW is getting into battery production and is planning five battery gigafactories
BMW wants to account for at least half of total sales with electric cars by 2030.
BMW becomes the latest automaker planning to move into battery manufacturing for its electric vehicle portfolio. The German luxury carmaker seems poised to follow the steps of Volkswagen Group, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors to enter the battery-making segment, Manager Magazin reports. That’s a 180-degree shift from the automaker’s philosophy, which it unveiled last year when the company’s CTO, Frank Weber, said battery technology is constantly evolving and frequent changes in cell chemistry make it impossible to scale to a factory invest to build specific types of battery packs.

Now that the automaker is looking to move into battery production, it plans to join forces with partners to build five battery gigafactories around the world, strategically positioned where the automaker makes electric vehicles to reduce its logistics costs. This revelation came from Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
BMW is aiming for solid-state batteries in its EV battery manufacturing ambitions. The solid state batteries are said to be more energy efficient and offer better range, improved thermal efficiency and also significantly better performance.
At the BMW Group’s annual media conference, Joachim Post outlined the OEM’s battery production plans. “In the future, we will also operate gigafactories in the regions where we produce electric cars,” he said without giving details. The company has already signed agreements with partners such as CATL, Northvolt and Samsung SDI.
BMW is aiming for a strong battery supply chain to strengthen its EV portfolio. CEO Oliver Zipse previously announced an ambitious goal that battery-powered electric cars will account for at least half of BMW’s total sales by 2030. Then the two subsidiaries Mini and Rolls-Royce will drive purely electrically in the next decade.
