BMW Group and Volkswagen Group join the ‘Quantum Technology and Application Consortium’
– Development of quantum computing in vehicle applications
– 10 German companies are founding members of the consortium
BMW Group and Volkswagen Group are two of ten German companies that are jointly establishing the Quantum Technology and Application Consortium (QUTAC). The aim of this consortium is to further develop the existing fundamentals of quantum computing into usable industrial applications.
Put simply, QUTAC aims to bring together industry-relevant applications for the technology, chemical and pharmaceutical, insurance and automotive industries.
This is intended to create the basis for the industrialization of quantum computing in Germany and Europe. The founding members of this consortium include – BASF, BMW Group, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bosch, Infineon, Merck, Munich Re, SAP, Siemens and Volkswagen Group.
With the “impulse and future package”, the federal government has pushed the development of quantum computers. Working together, these companies will identify, develop, test and share such new age applications. There are many highly interesting areas such as logistics, transport, chemistry or the financial sector that these German corporations can explore by exchanging their know-how.
The companies involved consider an economically strong and resilient quantum computing ecosystem in Germany and Europe to be crucial in order to promote successful industrialization and digital sovereignty in this area. QUTAC’s vision is to advance such a quantum computing ecosystem. The consortium promotes applications for the commercial use of this technology, which is required in the member companies. And in doing so, they can generate industrial demand, since the members are spread across a broad cross-section of German economy. This means that the applications identified, developed and tested in the consortium are future-oriented for all industries.
The results and decisions of the consortium should benefit all those involved in the ecosystem. QUTAC has specified concrete steps – first of all, the need for quantum computing in the German economy is to be identified in order to create the basis for cross-industry application. Possible applications are currently being identified and their potential for industrial implementation is being evaluated. These reference applications are jointly implemented and further developed beyond the boundaries of the consortium.
